My Sydney Weekend

Be a local in Sydney for a weekend! I love my Sydney weekends visiting friends especially those with their finger on the pulse and a car in the garage. I could have visited these areas by using the trains & buses and of course a good pair of walking shoes! These type of weekends are totally different to the weekends with my partner.

Coastal Walk

One of my favourite things to do in Sydney is the Bondi to Bronte Coastal Walk. This section is 3 kilometres with the whole walk  from Coogee to Bondi around 6 kilometres. The views are amazing including watching the whales in whale watching season. The sound of the Pacific Ocean is soothing, people watching is fascinating and photographic opportunities galore! I have done it on beautiful summer days as well as cold windswept winter days, both are wonderful and invigorating. My suggestion is to have a reward at the end, mine is usually a great lunch in one of the iconic restaurants.

A tip of mine is, if the budget does not stretch to lunch at Icebergs, pop underneath it to the Surf Club, it has the same view!

Note: Sadly after all the recent rain (June 2016), parts of the walk have been washed away so detours have been put into place. Fences and alternate routes have been put in place and there are also detour maps in a number of locations to guide you.

Waverley Cemetery

My latest find in this area was the Waverley Cemetery at Bronte (I know!), opened in 1877.There are many well known Australians buried here, Henry Lawson, writer & poet, John Sands, greeting card manufacturer, and William Dymock, book seller, are a few I found interesting. It is fascinating to walk around this cemetery (over 16 hectares) reading the old tombstones. The views from here are to die for! Sorry!

My tip is to have breakfast at Three Blue Ducks, a famous Sydney restaurant. It is well known for great breakfasts!

Carriageworks

Carriageworks is the old Eveleigh Rail Yards in Redfern. The building was a railway carriage and blacksmith workshops. Not much has changed, the space is industrial with lots of different textures and the iron and brick work is still in place.Carriageworks is Australia’s largest and most contemporary multi arts centre, the day I went there were some amazing exhibitions on. Being a contemporary art centre, I found I had to read some of the information as I couldn’t quite work out what I was looking at! To me that is the joy of modern art.

Check what is on. http://carriageworks.com.au/events/

Carriageworks Markets

Another first for me this weekend was a trip to Carriageworks for the Saturday morning farmers markets. My wonderful friend Bron is an excellent cook and we went around the markets, tasting and talking to the producers and before long we had the ingredients for a wonderful dinner. I love Sydney markets!
