3 Day Simpson Desert Tour
This tour highlights the Aboriginal & European Heritage of Central Australia from 1860. Explorer John McDouall Stuart’s Landmarks. Simpson Desert Pioneer,Ted Colson's, home. Experience the remoteness & hardships of Overland Telegraph & Old GHAN rail workers. Molly Clark's Heritage Homestead
DAY 1 (L,D)
South East to our first stop the Aboriginal Community of Santa Teresa. See mirages and climb big red sand dunes that you’ve only imagined. Visit rare Acacia Peuce “Waddy Trees” in the driest part of Australia. Along the Old Andado Track to Molly Clarks Pioneer Homestead in the Simpson Desert
We traverse the Southern Hemisphere’s largest private Cattle Station “Andado”. Through the Finke River Floodout and across the NT-SA Border to Mt Dare Hotel, a unique remote Oasis for man & birds in far north South Australia.
Dinner,Bed and Breakfast at Mt Dare offers the opportunity to mingle with locals and Simpson Desert Travellers.
DAY 2 (B,L,D)
For early risers, walks & birding around Mt Dare Hotel – Red Tailed Cockatoos & Little Corellas are often seen. Todays journey within Witjira Park, highlights the pioneering courage of settlers at Bloods Creek, Federal & Dalhousie. In 1936 Ted Colson did the first crossing of the Simpson Desert and then returned to Bloods Creek Homestead. Time to swim in Dalhousie Thermal Pool, vast 360degree horizons up to 100 metres away as we cross gibber strewn, treeless country. Return to the enclave of Mt Dare Hotel to swap yarns with fellow travellers.
Campfire Lunch & Billy Tea amongst Sand Dunes & Mulga Scrub. Return, via Blood Creek sheep station ruins, to Mt Dare Hotel for a relaxing evening.
DAY 3 (B,L)
Farewells at Mt Dare. Onto Finke Township where we run parallel to the Old Ghan embankment and the finish line of the Finke Desert Race Track. North across the Finke River & along the Old Ghan track to Bundooma. West over sand dunes to Alice Well on the Hugh River. This Historical village site (1887 to 1911) is accessed by only a small number of Modern travellers. Along a beautiful Red Sand Track which follows a remaining section of the Old Telegraph Line to Titjikala.
Continue our journey to the Historic Chambers Pillar. Time here to walk;
reflect and enjoy the remote and beautiful outback desert region before returning to Alice Springs.
