Looking north from Melbourne, the foothills of Victoria’s High Country
are silhouetted against the early sunrise. This is a journey of discovery,
as the micro-habitats of tree canopy, bark, under-storey, logs and
ground cover all come together to make the forest in a place we call
the ‘Mystic Mountains’.
Our journey takes us through the Black Range and introduces you to
pioneers of our land. The history of the Taungerong and the timber
millers is still visible as we follow river and mountain tracks through
forests of ash, messmate and tea tree, to mountain tops with seemingly
endless views across the High Country.
You’ll hear stories about the High Country mountain cattlemen, the
pioneers from the timber era and the indigenous culture of the Kulin
nation whose tribes extended from Melbourne’s bays well into this region
they called Murrindindi (Mist in the Mountains).
Walk in rain forest millions of years old, discover sculptures hidden in
forest trails and breathe clear mountain air. Stroll beside waterfalls where
you’ll hear the forest mimic, the superb lyrebird. Then enjoy a brew of
‘billy tea’ as our steaks are cooked on a bush BBQ.
We return to Melbourne, having experienced one of the most picturesque
forest drives in Victoria.
