This day tour will make sure you get to see all the main sites, the beautiful historical town of Richmond where Australia's oldest bridge is located, and the amazing Port Arthur where you will learn all about our convict's history and the beginning of Australia. The scenery is amazing along the Tasman Peninsula, great photo opportunities at Tasman Arch, Devil's Kitchen and many other locations.
This interesting and informative full day tour includes a visit to historic Richmond, en route to the Tasman Peninsula, former penal settlement Port Arthur and the Tasmanian Devil Park.
Leaving your Hobart accommodation at around 8 am, you will travel northeast to the beautiful and historic town of Richmond – a one-time convict station and military staging post. Home to a range of well-preserved Georgian architecture, this convict heritage site is filled with sandstone structures including Australia's oldest Catholic Church - St John's – the old gaol and Richmond Bridge, the oldest in Australia still in use.
From Richmond, you will travel through the magnificent scenery synonymous with Tasmania, to the Tasman Peninsula, where jagged cliffs meet the sultry sea. Here you will explore some of Australia's most dramatic natural coastal features, including Pirates Bay Lookout, Eaglehawk Neck, Tasman Arch and Devils Kitchen. From the cliff tops, you can witness the powerful seascape that saw a number of notable shipwrecks and which forms a timeless continuum to this ancient land of dense wilderness and bloody history.
Upon leaving the Tasman Peninsula, you will continue to Port Arthur, the former penal settlement with a savage history of brutality and violence. Your local guide will take you on an extensive tour of the ruins and tell the tales of convict life that formed the settlement of Australia. Known as 'Hell On Earth', Port Arthur was considered the most heinous penal settlement in Australia, the convict's life harsh and unrelenting. You will also cruise the harbour where the tiny island that houses the convict cemetery can be viewed.
To finish the day, you will visit the fascinating Tasmanian Devil Park for an up-close encounter with the endangered Tasmanian Devils and other native wildlife. You will return to your Hobart accommodation at around 6 pm.
