Start the day with a convenient hotel pick-up, before boarding the century-old Puffing Billy steam train for an unforgettable journey through the magnificent Dandenong Ranges. Puffing Billy is a genuine relic from a more leisurely time, and still travels along the original mountain railway track built to develop rural areas in the early 1900s. This historic journey offers spectacular views and an unforgettable travelling experience. Opportunities for stunning photos are plentiful, so don't forget to pack a camera!
Next stop: the Yarra Valley. The Yarra Valley is one of Australia's finest wine producing regions, and we will spend the day visiting renowned wineries and sampling their wonderful produce. The Yarra Valley is also an area of striking natural beauty, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the Dandenong mountains and Great Dividing Ranges. The area boasts a wonderful climate, and it is this that makes it such a great wine-growing region. The cool air is particularly suited to high-quality Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and sparkling varieties.
Rochford wines produce some of the best sparkling wines around, and offer a full experience at their five-star rated winery. James Halliday’s Wine Companion 2016 Edition awarded Rochford their highest rating for the second year in a row! We will visit the winery and sample some of the fine wines produced there.
The Dominique Portet wine-making dynasty has it roots in 18th century Bordeaux, and ten generations of family experience and wisdom go into their celebrated wines. Now firmly established in the Yarra Valley, a visit to this winery allows another opportunity to learn about the art of wine-making and sample some of the best wines in Australia in charming, picturesque settings.
The day will continue with more wine tastings and stunning scenery as we travel through the Yarra Valley in our comfortable air-conditioned coach. An optional winery lunch is possible as an add-on for those who would like to sample some of the region's fabulous fresh produce as well as its stunning wines.
All you need to bring along are comfortable walking shoes, sunglasses, sunscreen, a hat, and a water bottle. Make sure you charge your camera so you can capture the natural beauty along the way and make memories of the elegant wineries visited and friends made along the way.
