All aboard Puffing Billy, Australia’s best loved steam train! • Feed the parrots at Sherbrooke Forest
• Ride on Puffing Billy steam train
• Wine tasting and spit roast lunch at Fergusson’s Winery
• Sweet treats at Yarra Valley Chocolaterie and Ice Creamery
• Meet the local wildlife at Healesville Sanctuary
This fun-filled day starts in the east of Melbourne, at Sherbrooke Forest in the heart of the Dandenong Ranges, where you’ll come across typical Australian forest sights, including tall Eucalyptus trees, kookaburras and bellbirds. Australian-grown Bush Billy tea is served with some famous Aussie snacks, including delicious lamingtons, and crackers with Vegemite. We don’t want the wildlife to miss out though, so we’re giving you the chance to feed the Crimson Rosellas, and King Parrots.
Next, it’s on to Belgrave Station, where it’s all aboard Puffing Billy, Australia’s best loved steam train. Belgrave is Puffing Billy’s headquarters, and the place where you'll start your journey on this narrow gauge railway around the mountains. Dangle your legs out of the carriage if you’re feeling brave, and capture some breathtaking photos as you pass through the bush villages with their restaurants, craft shops and landscaped gardens.
If that sounds like hungry work, you’ll be pleased to see our next stop, Fergusson’s Winery. The grown-ups get to enjoy the award winning Yarra Valley wines produced by Fergusson’s, while owner Louise Fergusson treats all visitors as her personal guests, cooking a delicious spitroast lunch. Asian cuisine and vegetarian alternatives are also available.
If the kids, or your sweet tooth, are feeling left out, the Yarra Valley Chocolaterie and Ice Creamery is sure to tick some boxes. Billed as a sweet feast for the senses, you can look forward to chocolate tasting, stunning displays of premium chocolates, and the chance to watch the chocolatiers in action.
Your last stop of the day is the township of Healesville, set in mountain bushland, where you’ll get a VIP tour of Healesville Sanctuary. Home to more than 200 varieties of Australian birds, reptiles and mammals, in the most natural bush land setting, you’ll see Tasmanian devils, dingoes, goannas, snakes and echidnas. Take a walk through the paddocks of wallabies and kangaroos, and see if you can spot the eagles, elusive lyrebirds, spoonbills and ibis in the extensive aviaries of wild birds. The Eagles Fly demonstration is sure to take your breath away.
If water-based wildlife is more your thing, there are plenty of ponds, and you can even have a look underwater to see how the platypus spends its day.
Of course, it wouldn’t be a trip to a sanctuary in Australia without the chance to meet a koala or wombat, and you can do both here before you head home. Take advantage of the free Wi-Fi on the coach to share those photos with your friends!
Perfect for kids old and young, this is a day out which everyone can enjoy. What a great day out for the young, and the young at heart.
