An epic 4WD journey through World Heritage-listed Daintree Rainforest to historical Cooktown. Experience our natural and cultural heritage...
Day 1 (MT, L) Travel in air-conditioned comfort in our purpose-built 4WD vehicle, experiencing some of the most amazing scenery and natural beauty in Australia. Our journey takes us along The Great Barrier Reef Drive from Cairns. The road hugs two World Heritage-listed areas, the Great Barrier Reef and the Wet Tropics Rainforest. Cross the Daintree River by cable ferry for a leisurely drive through this ancient land. Enjoy the magic of the rainforest en route as you indulge in tasty homemade scones with jam and cream and sip on fresh local Daintree Tea or coffee.
Your experienced guide will enlighten your journey with fascinating stories and history as we continue along the famous 4WD- only Bloomfield Track, the site of one of Australia’s biggest environmental protests. Next stop is the Bana Yirriji Art and Cultural Centre, Wujal Wujal, which is located on the banks of the Bloomfield River. Here, you will have the opportunity to visit and talk with local Indigenous artists before lunch.
Our journey continues north to the infamous Lions Den Hotel, one of Queensland's landmark pubs, built in 1875, made of timber and iron. Then it’s a short distance to see the unique geological oddity, “Black Mountain”; one of Australia's most restricted habitats for endemic fauna, shrouded in mystery and spoken of in Aboriginal legend. You will arrive in historic Cooktown in the early afternoon where we visit Grassy Hill for panoramic views of Cooktown, the Coral Sea and Endeavour River. Be sure to have your camera ready! Overnight: Cooktown Seaview Motel
Day 2 Have the day to explore Cooktown at your leisure and experience the unspoilt beauty of the area, which remains much the same as when Captain Cook arrived in 1770. Enjoy the stunning scenery and experience the present day appeal and intriguing heritage of this iconic town.
Visit the world class James Cook Museum or stroll the self-guided heritage walk along the main street and shores of the Endeavour River. Discover Nature’s Powerhouse in the Botanic Gardens, a fantastic environmental centre that is home to the Vera Scarth-Johnson Gallery as well as a cafe, ideal for morning tea or lunch (own expense). The tour concludes with a commercial flight along the scenic Daintree Coast and the Great Barrier Reef with Hinterland Aviation. Cooktown Airport transfers are included and depart at 4:30pm. The flight departs Cooktown at 5:45pm and arrives Cairns General Aviation Airport at 6:30pm. You will then make your own way back to your accommodation. Taxis are available at own cost and can be requested on board your flight.
