Tour Description
Wantharra! Welcome to Guurrbi Tours!
Now listed as One of Australia's Ultimate Must-Do Experiences, these magical, award-winning rock art tours are in the company of Aboriginal Elder, Willie Gordon, the traditional story-keeper of the Nugal-warra clan. Willie takes you to visit his ancestral rock art sites, set in stunning countryside high in the hills outside Cooktown. Here he shares the stories behind the art, and explains how the paintings speak of the essence of life and the lores of his people. With his great smile and infectious laugh, Wille gives you an amazing insight into Aboriginal society and spirituality, and has you thinking about your own relationship with the land, and how the lores of his people can apply to us all today.
Willie's Great Emu Tour includes a visit to three rock art sites. The tour begins at your Cooktown accommodation, where Guurrbi Tours collect you for your air-conditioned journey to the outskirts of Hope Vale Aboriginal Community, about 40 minutes from Cooktown. On the way you will learn some of the Aboriginal history and stories about the landscape you are passing through. Once at the entrance to the site you will leave the vehicle and continue on foot, walking with Willie through a dramatic landscape to visit three sites, including the Great Emu Cave and the Rainbow Serpent Cave. Here Willie explains the significance of the paintings, and the meanings and stories within the art. The tour is suitable for most ages: there is a short climb to one of the sites, but overall very little walking is involved.
Prices are based on minimum of 2 adults. A single supplement of $30.00 is payable locally if only one person on tour.
Wanhthaal-bi ngayu! We look forward to seeing you!
