Tour Description
Wantharra! Welcome to Guurrbi Tours!
Now listed as One of Australia's Ultimate Must-Do Experiences, these magical, award-winning rock art tours are in the company of Aboriginal Elder, Willie Gordon, the traditional story-keeper of the Nugal-warra clan. Willie takes you to visit his ancestral rock art sites, set in stunning countryside high in the hills outside Cooktown. Here he shares the stories behind the art, and explains how the paintings speak of the essence of life and the lores of his people. With his great smile and infectious laugh, Wille gives you an amazing insight into Aboriginal society and spirituality, and has you thinking about your own relationship with the land, and how the lores of his people can apply to us all today.
On Willie's Great Emu Tour you walk through a dramatic landscape to three rock art sites, including the Rainbow Serpent and Great Emu Caves. Here Willie explains the significance of the paintings, and the stories and meanings within the art. The tour is suitable for most ages: there is a short climb to one of the sites, but overall very little walking is involved.
Prices are based on a minimum of 2 adults. A single supplement of $30.00 is payable locally if only one person on tour.
Self-drive information
1. Those self-driving to the Nugal rock art sites will be given a map to the Guurrbi Meeting Point, about 45 minutes drive from Cooktown. Please note, the sites are not signed as they cannot be visited without a Nugal-warra guide.
2. Some of the drive from Cooktown is on unsealed roads, and whilst normally accessible to all vehicles, it can get slippery during or after wet weather.
3. If renting a vehicle it is advisable to check your insurance extends to off-road driving.
Wanhthaal-bi ngayu! We look forward to seeing you!
