Your driver guide will entertain you with commentary about the areas you pass along the way, from the historical to the modern and everything in between.
In addition, you’ll have an entry into the fascinating Fremantle Prison, which was built by its convicts and was in operation until 1991. Here, you can participate in either the ‘Doing Time' tour or the 'Great Escapes' tour, after which, you’ll be able to jump back on the tram* and continue with your city tour.
Fremantle Prison Doing Time Tour:
This 1 hour 15-minute tour operates every half hour between the hours of 10 am and 5 pm.
From the time Fremantle Prison was built in the 1850s, until it closed its maximum security doors in 1991, this place of punishment has seen some serious stuff. The prison has been both a full time and part time home to some of Australia’s worst offenders, petty criminals and even those wrongfully convicted, who were totally innocent. On this tour, you will learn of their lives behind bars and how they spent it.
You’ll see how the convicts and prisoners were secured in the Main Cell Block, the Yard and the chapel. You’ll also see how they were punished at the whipping post, the solitary cells and the gallows – the ultimate punishment.
Fremantle Prison Great Escapes Tour:
This 1 hour 15-minute tour operates every half hour between the hours of 11:45 am and 4:45 pm.
Fremantle Prison was certainly a secure facility, with everything from high walls, gates and razor wire, to shackles, gun towers and isolation cells, but for many of those incarcerated here, the lure of the outside world was almost unbearable. During this tour, your friendly and experienced guide will take you on a journey to explore the areas and methods these prisoners and convicts used in their attempts to escape. You’ll see Moondyne Joe’s inescapable cell, the rifle range and the women’s prison, among other exciting areas.
You’ll be dropped off in time for either tour and picked back up afterwards, giving you complete flexibility. Just be sure to consult with your tram driver about accurate pickup times.
