An action packed day full of exquisite wildlife, surf beaches, beautiful nature walks, spectacular coastal views, amazing shipwreck tales, incredible rock formations and a delicious picnic lunch make for an excellent adventure.
With convenient pickup from either Hotel Discovery (167 Franklin St), the Holiday Inn (Corner Spencer St and Flinders Lane), St. Paul's Cathedral (Cnr Flinders St & Swanston St) or the Habitat HQ (333 St Kilda Road, St Kilda) between 10 am and 12:30 pm (depending on season), you’ll hop aboard your comfortable tour bus and set off on a wonderful adventure.
Heading south west from the cosmopolitan city of Melbourne, it’s full steam ahead to the historical Memorial Arch – the gateway to the Great Ocean Road. This superb arch is a tribute to the returned servicemen from World War One, who built this road with sheer grit and determination in honour of their fallen comrades.
Next, you’ll re-board your bus and head off to a surf beach. Breathe in the crisp ocean air, feel the fresh wind swept sea spray, glorious sun on your skin and squish some soft white sand between your toes in this world renowned surfing mecca.
Passing through the popular quaint little seaside resort towns of Anglesea and Lorne, you will witness some of the most spectacular coastal views as you leisurely wind your way towards a bit of wildlife watching. With Koalas aplenty, it would be very surprising if you did not see one or two of these cuddly little marsupials sleeping peacefully in the eucalyptus trees! Cheeky and beautifully colored lorikeets come down for a sticky beak and maybe sneak a tasty treat or leftover titbit.
After a delicious picnic lunch, you’ll travel to Otway rainforest. This ancient delicate ecosystem is home to one of the tallest tree types in the world, so look high up into the canopy and see how they dwarf everything around them. Lush green fern gullies and ancient moss covered roots thrive in this exquisite piece of Mother Nature’s handiwork.
Travel along the ruggedly beautiful Shipwreck Coast to Loch Ard Gorge, where an amazing 700 ships have befallen disaster in this area, with less than one third of these being found. You’ll follow this Historic Shipwreck Trail and keep an eye out for the signposts that indicate twenty-five of the best-known wrecks. Loch Ard is probably the most recognizable shipwreck in this region and she went down just off Mutton Bird Island.
You now have a very special treat in store – kick back, relax and watch as the pinks, purples, blues and yellows of the sun slowly set behind the colossal limestone towers of the Twelve Apostles. The contrast between these and the thunderous pounding waves of the Great Southern Ocean is simply awe-inspiring.
