Tour ID: 10059138
This innovative all day tour encompasses the Twelve Apostles, Loch Ard Gorge, Otway Rainforest, Apollo Bay, exquisite Australian wildlife and the spectacular scenery and highlights of the Great Ocean Road – and all without the crowds!
This terrific tour leaves Melbourne at approximately 7 am, with pickup and drop off available from most inner city accommodation. Boarding your tour bus, you'll head west on this tour instead of the more commonly traveled southern route. Beginning this tour in the opposite direction, you'll get to explore and enjoy the glorious Great Ocean Road and all it has to offer without the masses of competing sight-seeing and photography buffs.
Heading through lush green dairy country, you'll first visit the picture perfect Colac park for your first stop and a delicious morning tea. Next, you'll travel along the once-treacherous Shipwreck Coast to Loch Ard Gorge with its towering limestone cliffs and rugged coastline. Here, 700 ships have gone down and the location of only around a third of these is known. As you take the historically significant Shipwreck Trail, you'll be regaled by stories of the amazing shipwrecks that have occurred. Loch Ard, which sank just off Mutton Bird Island, is arguably the most popular wreck in the area but keep an eye out for the signpost indication the 25 most known wrecks within the region.
Next, hop back on your bus and onto the next exciting destination - the iconic Twelve Apostles. These stunning limestone formations are located close to each other just off the coast of the Port Campbell National Park. Here, Mother Nature's awesome power is evident, with the formations being sculpted over thousands of years and honed into what they are today by the wind and waves. A sumptuous lunch is provided at a beautiful spot on the Great Ocean Road.
Refreshed and fully sated, you then visit the spectacular Otway Rainforest. The forest is a wonderful place to have a stroll and soak up the ambience of what it means to be in a real temperate forest region. The sights, sounds and smells of this lush, misty and very special place will leave you smiling with a relaxed and rejuvenated spirit.
Next, it's off to the quaint little seaside town of Apollo for some possible souvenir shopping, delightful sight-seeing, more refreshments or all three. Spot the adorable, sleepy and very cuddly wild Koalas, hanging out in their eucalyptus trees at the best spot in Australia for koala watching at Kennett River. Some beautifully colored and very cheeky native birds will most likely pop over to say hello too.
Making your way back to Melbourne, you'll pass through Lorne and Anglesea. Feel the sand beneath your feet on a famous surf beach, travel under the historical Memorial Arch and enjoy a delicious pizza dinner or Aussie barbecue in Torquay before returning to Melbourne at around 9 pm. Here, you'll be returned to your original pickup point.
