Unforgettable Whitsunday Experiences

We recently took a trip to Airlie Beach and the Whitsundays for 4 days and fit in as much adventure as we could. I’m no photographer by any means but the Whitsundays makes it so easy! With over 74 Islands on the Great Barrier Reef and some of the most stunning beaches in Australia you could take the worst camera you have and still come back with photos you love. We did a few of the top Whitsundays Tours and some of the lesser known adventures as well as sampling the free things to do and the culinary delights of the area. Below are some of the places we saw, things we did and experiences we had along with some tips about each place that we picked up on the trip.

Cedar Creek Falls

Pro Tip: take mosquito spray. It’s on the way to Proserpine and there are 2 turn offs you need to take and a little dirt road. It’s well signed and well worth the drive.

Seaplane flight to Hardy’s Lagoon over Heart Reef

Pro Tip: The Panorama Tour  stops at the reef so you can go snorkelling. It also stops at Whitehaven Beach for an hour.

Visit the Living Reef on Daydream Island

Pro Tip: The free educational feeding sessions happen twice a day. 10am at the northern end of the island, and 12:30pm at the southern end of the island. The Living Reef experience was one of my highlights from the Whitsundays.

Hill Inlet

Pro Tip: Hill Inlet and Whitehaven Beach are close but they aren’t the same thing. Some tours will take you to Hill Inlet so you can walk up to the lookout but Ocean Rafting are the only ones actually allowed in the inlet. We loved seeing it from the air.

Hamilton Island

Pro Tip: you can fly straight into Hamilton Island and there is a lot of different accommodation but it pays to book ahead since it’s so popular. You can get day tours and boat transfers from Airlie Beach too and there are so many things to do on Hamilton Island its worth staying for a few days.

Spion Kop Walk on South Molle Island

Pro Tip: Another good walk is the Mid Molle walk at low tide. We did this on the Adventure Island tour but you can camp on the island too. The Adventure Island tour is a budget tour and also includes Whitehaven Beach and snorkelling the Great Barrier Reef.

Whitehaven Beach

Pro Tip: Take your dirty jewellery. The sand on Whitehaven Beach is so fine it cleans your jewellery really well. There are a lot of tours to Whitehaven Beach and most extended sailing trips go there too. Do your research and find out what times they go, there can be a lot of people on the beach sometimes.

Whitsundays Jet Ski Tours

Pro tip: The Daydream Extreme tour is a great way to get to Daydream Island and spend a couple of hours there. We loved this trip. it included a lunch voucher and the Living Reef experience too.

Mojitos at Fish Devine

Pro Tip: Talk to the bar staff and ask for a photo behind the bar. They’ll let you in there for a photo if they’re feeling good. Fish Divine is sensational, I’d heard they did the best Mojitos in the world and obviously I haven’t tried all the Mojitos in the world but so far this is the best I’ve had! The seafood and other meals were exceptional too.
